Generally speaking, there are two things I've found in my long life when you never do. One is never feel sorry for yourself. If your child is dying of cancer, don't feel sorry for yourself. Never ever feel sorry for yourself. And the other thing you never want to have is envy. That's the only one of the deadly sins you're never going to have any fun at at all. Pick one of the others. But if you stop, think of the pretentious expenditures of the rich. Who in the hell needs a Rolex watch so you can get mugged for it? You know, I mean, it's... Yet everybody wants to have a pretentious expenditure. And that helps drive demand in our modern capitalist society. My advice to the young people is don't go there. The hell with a pretentious expenditure. I don't think there's much happiness in it. It's all this enormous increase in living standards and freedom and diminishment of racial inequities and all the huge progress that has come. People are less happy about the state of affairs than they were when things were way tougher. And that has a very simple explanation. The world is not driven by greed. It's driven by envy. So the fact that everybody's five times better off than they used to be, they take it for granted. All they think about is somebody else is having more now and it's not fair that he should have it and they don't. I like those old Stoics. And part of the secret of a long life that's worked as well as mine is not to expect too much of human nature. It's almost bound to be a lot of defects and problems. And to have your life full of seething resentments and hatreds, it's counterproductive. You're punishing yourself and not fixing the world. Can you think of anything much more stupid than trying to fix the world in a way that ruins yourself and doesn't fix the world? It's pretty stupid. Do you personally, Charlie, someone who worked very closely with Dave Sokol, feel betrayed? It's not my nature. When you get little surprises as a result of human nature, to spend much time feeling betrayed, I always want to just put my head down and adjust. So I don't allow myself to spend much time ever with any feelings of betrayal. So you're asking the wrong person because if some flickering idea like that came to me, I'd get rid of it quickly. I don't like any feeling of being victimized. I think that's a counterproductive way to think as a human being. And I am not a victim. How did... I'm a survivor. The toxic people who are trying to fool you or lie to you, who aren't reliable in meeting their commitments, a great lesson of life is get the hell out of your life. Yeah. And do it fast. Do it fast. And I would add, Charlie won't totally agree with me, do it tactfully if possible too. But do get them out of your life. Yes. Yeah, I don't mind a little tact. Or even a little financial cost. But the question is getting them a hell out of the life. I constantly see people rise in life who were not the smartest, sometimes not even the most diligent. But they are learning machines. They go to bed every night a little wiser than they were when they got up. And boy, does that habit help, particularly when you have a long run ahead of you. It's so simple to spend less than you earn and invest shrewdly and avoid toxic people and toxic activities and try and keep learning all your life, et cetera, et cetera. And do a lot of deferred gratification because you prefer life that way. And if you do all those things, you are almost certain to succeed. And if you don't, you're going to need a lot of luck. A lot of luck. So a happy life is very simple. The first rule of a happy life is low expectations. That's one you can easily arrange. And if you have unrealistic expectations, you're going to be miserable all your life. And I was good at having low expectations. And that helped me. And also, when you get reverses, if you just suck it in and cope, that helps if you don't just fretfully stew yourself into a lot of misery. Well, luckily, I got at a very early age the idea that the safest way to try and get what you want is to try and deserve what you want. is to try and get the best way to try and get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to get the best way to
